'It was a pleasure to work with Joe, from conception through to delivery on site.
Eclectrick brought creative flair, imagination and a thorough approach to the design of The Ammonite Quest - a unique sensory based experience for visitors to Whitby Abbey.'
Ruth Haycock, Interpretation Manager (North), English Heritage.
We were challenged to create something for English Heritage to help visitors understand the rich history of Whitby Abbey and wealth of archaeological history in and around the site.
Designed from scratch, we created the concept of a kind of treasure hunt that encourages visitors to hunt for ten significant find spots in and around the Abbey, each one discreetly marked with a coloured spot in the ground. Upon discovering the location, the device vibrates and the corresponding coloured light illuminates.
The central light reacts to the perimeter of buried building outlines, allowing the visitor to trace out the shapes of whats underground with the help of an additional vibrational feedback .
Once inside the exhibition the device reacts again to the actual objects on display through the flashing of the corresponding light and vibration, allowing the visitor to draw a contextual link and form a more personally relevant relationship with the object. The experience works very well as a group/family activity as well as an individual one.
The devices are water-proof and are reset and recharged wirelessly by being placed upon the storage rack and all external elements required to make the whole thing work are solar powered minimising the need for disturbing the ground or site - extremely important in a Scheduled Monument!
There is also an accompanying free mobile phone app which also responds to the location finds providing more in depth interpretation and viewable 3d models of the objects.
